I shall! I just sent you a reply as well.
Gah...I just got into one of those fixes again, wherein I am reading three books at once... I guess reading is good for your writing too though... |

Solo, I am always reading about six books at the same time. I blame it on my mom. I think I must have got it from her. |

I may be rather disjointed, but hey! I'm here!
*sneaks in* Shh! I'm not really here! *looks shifty*
Yeesh! I haven't been in here in forever...it's all that *mutters unintelligently* math, I'm telling you... But I did manage to enter your contest, Lalaith.
I have so many books lying around half-read. I really need to finish them.
Asbran, your fanfic sounds impressive!
Do you know, I once wrote a scrap where the MC was nearly eaten by a monster that lived at the bottom of a well...a sort of siren/jellyfish/venus flytrap thing. Then she was 'rescued' by these mysterious twins who were secretly allied with the sand people, blood enemies of the sylvan tribes...or something like that.
Edmund, Lalaith, Solo, Undomiel, Asbran, Samhobbit, Nimhiril, Sek (did I miss anyone?):
Write on!
Randomly yours,

I always try to avoid reading more than one book at a time, but it's kind of hard. you've got your main book, then you've got your leave-it-by-the-bed book, then your very-small-book-you-can-fit-in-your-purse, and your brushing-your-teeth book.... Hullo!
You
don't read while you brush your teeth? I highly reccommend it.
Sigh. the only thing I've worked on writing-wise lately is this weird stage-play my friend and I thought of really late one night, called 'Rudolpho', about this guy named, coincidentally enough, Rudolpho. It involves a 14 year old invalid who is Rudolpho's ward, and a schizophranic woman who thinks she is three different people (but one at a time, she doesn't know she's all thre), one of whom is madly in love with Rudolpho, the other wants to kill him, and the third tries to make peace between all parties. It's all very complicated. And there's a phsychologist named Hynes. It's very silly. Or siily, whichever you prefer.
Asbran, I kept meaning to have you e-mail some of your lotr thing to me, I think you can get my e-mail address from the bottom of this post, or maybe in my profile. |

I've actually read a book while brushing my teeth...I won't vouch for how clean my teeth got, however. |

Whenever I do it, my teeth are sure to get squeaky clean, because my mind forgets that I'm brushing, but my hands don't, so I brush for longer usually. Ask your dental hygenist about it today! |

Undomiel, I've heard people say that Gollum was schizophenic, but he wasn't was he? But I don't believe he had what could be called Multiple Personality Disorder. Or did he? Because both Gollum and Smeagol were aware of each other, and could communicate. Whereas with Multiple Personality Disorder, it's my understanding that the various personalities don't interact. What would Gollum's disorder be called? Or of course, I could be completely wrong.

Multiple Personalities is characterized by amnesia. The person often has long periods of time they don't remember. Awareness of other personalities varies from person to person. As far as Gollum is concerned.... I have no idea. I'm not an expert on mental health but I've never heard of that kind of disorder in real life. The closest thing to it is Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. |

The thing with Gollum/Smeagol was, they were both real people. I mean, real in the book... *is pelted for not thinking the book really happened* Though I suppose one might argue that with people with MPD, their personalities are also real.
But don't we all go through something like that? Where one side of us is telling us that one thing is right, and the other (maybe our concience) is telling us it isn't? I think someone should write a book about the different psychological phenomena in Lord of the Rings. Or maybe they should just write an analysis for each of the characters. Luckily for me, I am not qualified to do it. |

Nope, just sanity.
Don't forget to add the third party to the mix, oh no, Precious! So he talks to himself, his self answers back, and they both talk to, through, and by an inanimate object. What does that leave you with? |

I wouldn't diagnose Gollum with DID because they weren't really separate personalities, just opposite sides of the same personality. When one has DID the personalities all have their own histories and memories and personality traits separate from each other. There's really no difference between Gollum and Smeagol except that one is nice and one is good. They have the same history. As Solo said, it's more like arguing with your conscience. |

Solo!!!
Anyway, back to the topic.
I found your website, and the info about the contest, so I'm feeding my muse and creativity to see if I can come up with something that will work. Short Story, huh? Never done one of those before, should be fun and challenging. Do you know how much time we have Lalaith?

Undomiel, AsBran, Solo, Myriad, Sam,
I'm sorry guys, I do hope this is still on the thread's topic. I asked the question about MPD and DID to begin with, because I would like to know it, in case I ever had a character with these Disorders.
Undomiel, Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde sound somewhat familiar to Gollum's situation, at least the closest thing I can think of at the moment, same as you. But Jekyll and Hyde couldn't remember each other. And toward the end, he had absolutely no control over keeping Hyde back. Whereas Gollum was in control, he just chose to let the jerky side of him take over because of his frustrations. At least that's how it seemed to me. Of course, Jekyll's situation was caused by drugs, and Gollum's by a stupid choice, that was influenced by the Ring.
Solo, you're right, we all do that, but we also understand it's just coming from one person. Gollum got to referring to himself in the plural, and from what it appears to me, completely lost the understanding that he was only one person. But then he'd been by himself with just the ring for company for 500 years. It would be interesting to see someone who knew what they were doing, pyschoanalyze Gollum. It wouldn't be me!
Sam, well, I'm not sure yet when exactly I'll start taking the entries, (it will be this month, though) but the deadline will for sure be the first part of October. When my next book comes out. |

MMmmmm! Coke!
huh? oh sorry! We was just enjoying a Coca Cola from McDonald's weren't we my love?
Oh yes! Yes! A very lovely coke indeed, my precious! Why is they staring at us so, my precious?
We is not knowing, love. They is backing away from us now.
Then we must follow them, precious!
Yes! Yes!
what?
Ok, sorry. I couldn't help it. But it is a lovely coke we...er..I am drinking. *whistles* hehe...Psychoanalising Gollum...not I. I wonder if anyone would actually have the pluck to do so?
Anyway. Writing. yes. Well, I still haven't found that disk, so I might not be writing that particular story I started for the last contest. I might choose an excerpt of one of my books though. Lately, however, I've been writing an Agatha Christie fanfic with her character Hercule Poirot. No character is safe from my fanfiction! MUAHAHA! |

What shall I write about? Hmmm. That is the worst thing about entering these contests. No worries though, I always think of something three days before the contest ends, hurries to write it and some how it gets there on time. But then again, I have two months to think of something good.
Sek, you amaze me how you can actually get that coke down. *shudders at the horror filled thought of drinking (gasp) coke!* Eeeek!!!!!! |

Sek, very good my friends, er friend.
Ed, I'll look forward to your story!
Just fyi by the way, everybody, I've done two contests so far, and the part that I like the most, yet at the same time, dread the most, (odd how that is) is reading the stories and judging them. Because while it's enjoyable to read the stories/poems, I have to determine which ones win, and which ones don't. That's frickin' hard. |

I have made the commitment: I setting aside time to begin collating my poems and going to try to see if they can be published. There are a number of "vanity" press companies around, but I have heard of a company called Xulon Press, which a friend of mine used to publish his own book. Is this dream of publishing merely that, or are there some practical steps I should be taking? |

Hey Parm, I don't know much about "vanity" presses, except that if you're serious about your writing, you should avoid them. I would strongly suggest never going with anyone that can't distribute or advertise for you if you're serious about your writing, and actually want to have a significant amount of people aside from family and close friends read your work. If this Xulon Press can do that, I suppose your friend would know, or maybe you could do a little research yourself.
What I would do if I were you, would be to get a current copy of Writer's Market, you can also get a membership to writersmarket(dot)com and you should be able to find out about publishers and literary agents that accept poetry. |

I am an amateur at psychology so I will not be diagnosing Gollum anytime soon. Personality disorders are fun to use in writing, but DID has become a bit cliche. I love to use Borderline Personality Disorder, because it's so destructive.
I'm really looking forward to entering your writing contest, Lalaith! It occurred to me that I wrote a scene a while ago that I loved for my novel but then came to the dire realization that it really didn't fit anywhere in it. I think I might pull it out and dust it off and finish it for the contest. |

Undi~ I so know what you mean about that! I despise writing a wonderful scene and not being able to use it. Partly because it turns into many more stories in itself.
Lala~ yes yes.. we..er...I know. *looks shifty*
Parm~ good for you! I agree with Lala though, if you want to put together a book of your own poems then doing it the conventional way would be your best bet. I think most vanity press is for people who have a poem that's been sitting around for a while and want to have it published but do not have any others. Good luck with that!
Well, this isn't quite related to writing, other than my Hercule Poirot fanfic. I was playing the Sims 2 one day and decided to make Poirot into a sim. And it worked! he's perfect. I've even made Hastings, Miss Lemon and Inspector Japp into Sims. Sorry, just had to share. |

I was just thinking that....
I haven't done a lot of writing lately. I think I probably will soon though, since after this weekend of being rather busy, I shall be rather not busy for at least a week or so. And then I'm planning on working on some stuff...and maybe some illustrations to a book I started illustrating a long time ago and never finished. :S
Lalaith hasn't been posting cause she's been working on her book. So she hasn't forgotten us, she's just really busy with that. |

I am actually contemplating tackling a new writing project. There are lots of books out there now retelling various fairy tales . . . I'm going to try doing that with some of the less known fairy tales. We'll see how that goes. At the moment it's just in the contemplation stages. |

I just got back from a 4-day Intensive Writing Workshop at my school. It was designed for doctoral students who (like me) have been stuck trying to research and write their thesis-projects. The workshop leader was a woman who is a freelance editor. She's worked with lots of well-known Christian authors and publishing houses.
The workshop was designed with lots of time to work individually, plus daily sessions with the workshop leader for whoever wanted them. The workshop was right on campus, so one of the best theological libraries anywhere was right there for us to use. It was great working alongside other students (most of whom I didn't know before) and getting lots of helpful feedback. Looks like I'll graduate in May after all! |

Willar, methinks you're a mind reader. ^o) <--you get the idea. I think that's an awesome idea.
Oh yeah, I forgot about the poetry I've been writing... I'll have to post some of that in the poetry thread at some point. One of them was on Lalaith's site, but I'm not sure if it still is... |

I haven't been writing, but I have been working on my fantasy world. I've found over the past few years that though I am pretty good at learning languages, I'm no good at making them up. I'm also no good at inventing names. So to make sure there is consistency in all of the words and names of any given country in my world I've spent the last week assigning an existing language to each one and compiling a list of names I like from that language. It's meant that I've had to change quite a few names I had grown somewhat attached to but I think it'll make the whole a lot better.
I've tried to stay away from cliche as much as possible. For instance there is a particular country that is known for its scientists and philosphers. The logical and predictable language to use would be Greek but I'm using Welsh instead. |

Hey Lalaith! Ummm....I read about your contest and I was wondering what exactly you consider "fantasy". I have written several short stories, however, I don't really know if any of them would constitute as fantasy.
Poor me
Are we allowed to enter excerts from other works we've done? I usually save my full-blown fantasy ideas for my books. Is the exceptable? |

Evey, I hope you get it worked out.
I am a poor pitiful creature too
I have to tell a story within 200 words, in other words they want me to begin it and then end it But I really want to win the Ipod, so I let them push me around |

200 words?
Hmm...
I am a muskrat who paddles and digs, and I lived on a little gray pond. The sky was gray, the grass gray; it rained all day. The muskratter in his furry hat came crouching, slouching along. He had traps that snapped! Ropes that tied! He wanted my furry hide!
I hid in the mud, he hid on the shore; the night grew mucky and dim. Frost nibbled me, and frost nibbled him, till he crept off to his camp. I tiptoed near, trembling from whisker to toe. He snored like a bear, with the furry hat over his ears. Quick as a ferret, I darted in, grabbed that poor pelt, and then…
The muskratter woke with the drizzling dawn. He stretched with a yawn as he strolled to the pond. Snap! Went the trap laid under the mud! Clap! Went the muskratter's sack! He laughed as he slung his catch on his back!
Now the rain drizzles down on my pond every day, and still I'm a muskrat that paddles and digs. Faraway, longaway, a muskratter sits and howls; when he opened his sack and counted his catch, he found what he’d caught in his trap: A beaverskin cap!
Hehey! It works! |

Myriad, Not bad. Too bad it has to be a non-fiction story about how your summer went or I would just send yours *teases you*
Either no one has been writing or everyone is very secretive about it What is going on everyone? I know that Lalaith is working on her book (good luck to you), so what is everyone else doing?
I haven't been writing much for stories, except a couple non-fiction stories. A contest suggest sending in an interview on someone interesting to win some neat things. I keep an eye out for these sort of things There is many writing contests now that school has started again, so I am keeping on my toes. One, is a chance to win $16,000 dollars towards college. I think that one would be a good one to enter |

Nice Myriad. |

Yea, me too At least I finished the 200 word story Maybe I will start another. It is hard to sit down and write, but when I do, I don't stop for a few hours So if I could manage that, I probaly could get all of them done at the same time.
Has anyone at least managed to write a story for Lalaith? I haven't. *is ashamed * |

Okay...here's some good writing news, guys.
I am currently writing a story about an adventure in the dreamworld. I'm not going into details, but I would appreciate some advice on the naming of one particular thing...the dream realm itself. My original name for it was Requiesta...until I figured out that requiem is a funeral mass...not the latin name for dream...so I tried Remland...but that seemed rather cheesy. I can't just call it the Dream Realm...for my own sake...tee hee. Does anyone have any idea that could help me out?
I have to tell you though that I plan on publishing this story at one point, so if I use your idea.....well..I just wanted to let you all know in case it comes as a surprise.
Can you guys help? |

I don't know. That is quite a problem, isn't it? Maybe you should just try making up a name for it and say it came from an ancient unknown language? That is always what I do. It always makes it more simple. |
