I also love autumn the best of the seasons. The clean, crisp, cool air is what I like the best, and the coloring of the trees is great. |

Well if by one minute, you mean a few months... then yes.
Isn't it wonderful?
I think the first official TST baby was Sekhmet's... awhile ago... |

Yes, Sekhmet's baby would be almost old enough to start posting soon. |

I think it's great to have kids posting here. A lot of the older people here are still "young in heart". Often I would like to be more childlike (full of wonder) in my perception of the world.
I think I started posting here around 2005. I left for a while, but I missed this place and came back I don't know how long everyone else has been here. There was a link on someone's message on the "Into the Wardrobe" website to "The Stone Table". That was how I found this site. Others have probably found it with searching "C. S. Lewis" on Google. The design of the site has changed at least once since I first found it. It looks more attractive now with the new logo and the messages are in larger, more readable type. I bought a new computer a couple of years ago and was amazed at how much more attractive my favorite websites look-- including this one. |

I was exasperating about Sekhmet's kid.
But we need to do something so that this place will be lively when those kids do start showing up. |

By that time, I should think our children will be downloading things from the internet into their brains, and streaming live mind-video from their thoughts...
Oh gosh, I really sure hope not. |

Sorry about the double post, but I just heard that they are going to be making The Great Divorce into a movie! Has anyone else heard this, too? |

I wonder how they would make that book into a movie. A bus trip from hell to heaven-- it probably shouldn't be made to look like
Avatar
. Even if it was in 3-D I don't think that would work too well because it would distract from the author's content. The same with the space trilogy-- those stories seem very difficult to translate into film and remain accurate to the books.
Just a few minutes ago I saw the space station fly over. It's another marvel of technology that Lewis could only have dreamed of. But I don't think Lewis had too much interest in modern marvels since there wasn't too much machinery or gadgetry in the simple spacecraft of
Out of the Silent Planet
. He did like ships. They seem more old fashioned than spacecraft. Would he have liked the artists' concepts of the
Dawn Treader

I would hope he might, but we are taking our bedazzled 21st-century experiences
and all that has led up to them, and inviting Lewis to join us in our excitement,
when he is still probably in awe that we can also build ships, that challenge reality,
with computer graphics. I still remember the sensation I felt putting in my first floppy disk into the slot of my Mac Classic, and watching things...happen. I get shivers still!
On another topic,
one dear student has pleaded with our "powers that be" to get a poetry course started in the university. As I look over the hulking physique of the one asking, I cannot get over how the gift of writing can be born into all sorts of "frameworks"... I am, however, looking a little less like Silenus and more like Tumnus in slimness. Fifteen more kilo to go! and I reach my ideal BMI. Ganbatte Mira-sensei! |

I don't think Lewis would have liked computers even though he might have been amazed at what they can do. Like Tolkien, he was somewhat of a medievalist. However, Lewis was not against machines completely-- in fact I read somewhere that he came to believe that Jesus was the son of God while riding (as a passenger) on a motorcycle. That seems a bit strange even for Lewis. I can't picture his friend Tolkien riding on a mechanical device like that or sitting at a computer, although I'm sure he also had an interesting conversion experience. How about Lewis with "Jack" as his user name chatting with us online at "The Stone Table"? What the world of technology has brought us he and Tolkien could not imagine. When I was a child we had none of these inventions of progress except cars, radio, and TV. |

It is pretty astonishing to think of the kinds of changes that take place even in one lifetime--and not even a very long one. I learned to write on a chalkboard, for instance, which I doubt many students do today. (Now I sound like some old sage, which I'm definitely not--neither old, nor sage.)
On a more cheerful note, it's officially feeling like autumn here. And (no particular connection) I recently listened to
The Horse and his Boy
during a trip...that's the Chronicle that tend to get pushed to the background for me by more prominent and favorite ones like LB and VDT, but every time I go back to it, I remember how much I love it.
Hope all's well with all of you! |

Recently I got an e-mail saying that the "Into the Wardrobe" website is closing its forums. I hope that never happens here at "The Stone Table", but I guess even a C.S. Lewis website can't last forever. "Into the Wardrobe" was similar to TST but not a competitor. I think it will continue to offer information for some time without the forums. I know of at least one person here besides myself who is also a member of the Wardrobe. Hopefully, "The Stone Table" will last a very long time. It's the friendliest Lewis site and may now be the only one of that kind offering discussions for all ages of people. You don't think of a website with forums as just a business-- it's more like a community of people with the same interests and feelings for each other. |

I, too hope TST stays around for a long time. It is definitely a family.
I will be gone for a couple weeks, but I will try to get on to keep things clean, but I can't make any promises Sir Sammy and I are taking our annual trip to Montana and plan to be gone for two and a half weeks.
I will miss you guys. |

I agree with you all about this place being like a family.
I am frequently drawn away from my work with many other requests
for my time, but I come here because I want to be here...the lack
of compulsion makes me more enjoyable.
Odd how that works, sometimes.
My students are very eager about our oral reading days:
Up next
Prince Caspian for younger grades,
The Horse and His Boy for upper grades
The seniors read from The Lord of the Rings (We are in the Two Towers)
[We had originally slated using Out of the Silent Planet, but not so
many students had access to copies of their own from home. Ah, well,
I see where I need to invest next.]
Interesting adventures in reading are ahead!
Blessings on you all,
Parm |
