First of all, a warm welcome to our new voice
fgiusepp
. So, how
should we just cut and paste your name into our posts to you, or do you
have a special nickname you like? I am called Parm.
Second, as far as the town of Narni is concerned, that is an interesting
tidbit of information which I am most eager to hunt down. I once worked
for a law office, and one of the partners was Mr. Aslan. (pronounced Ays-lan) That was a surprise! |

I'm from the U.S., but I have Italian heritage (as well as a huge mishmash of others too). I had a great uncle named Giuseppe, and my Nonna was born near Florence (Firenze to you I think). You said that Narni was near Rome? |

I went online, and input the town of Narni on Google...and regretted it.
So much Italian...so little time to try to understand it. However, it did help
me to see some scenes of this picturesque spot. So, our friend Joseph is
from Italy! Well, this certainly is rounding out our coterie of friends, isn't
it? |

Actually, you can go to Yahoo images, and type in Narni, and there are a lot of results (a few are of a soul singer or something, but most are actually of Narni). And it's always fun to "translate this page" when you go to an Italian page. |

It looks like a really nice place Giuseppe. I wish I lived in a place with a name like that. Do you think Lewis took the name from there?
How exciting for you if he did!

Hi Giuseppi! That is neat....I have wondrered about the name, Narnia, since Lewis had many mythological names I recognized. So, now I have a nice basis.
So, your italian? That is awesome. I know several Italians here in the states. To be precise, Texas. Texas is not my home state, but I see them pretty often, because we're in a group...Ok, back on subject, WELCOME! |

I took a look at the website you mentioned to Lady
Aravis. If you do need any help with your English, please feel free to ask
about. There are so many people here who would be thrilled to see you
enjoy getting better and better at this most bewildering language...
the language in which, I hope, you are enjoying the Chronicles of Narnia. |

Translating the section here would have thrown this thread off topic a bit.
Therefore I have moved the relevent sections to http://forums.thestonetable.com/viewtopic.php?t=60
I will be attempting to help this week end and will be interested in how this turns out.
Once we are finished we may publish it on the main site with Giuseppe's permission
Have fun translating people! |

Dear Friends
like suggest I have write a new informations to traslate in good English , related with the work in the schools about Narnia i-Earn project.
This is the little article
Work of the Narni iEARN school Project
***************************
In the 2002 we start to work with some schools in Narni town in Italy , for share also with young peoples , the "Chronicles of Narnia" books, that till now , are not very well know in Italy.
The project deals with the following activities: to read the book and look the materials produced with the multimedia supports; to compare the religious aspects of the book , to go into the study the other books like "Harry Potter" and " The lord of the Rings" , to realize the pictures imaging the scenes of the books.
Other activities realized until now are: We realized a collection of multimedia materials from different countries in the world, and these materials were translated in the different languages of the schools partaking the project.
During this school year an exhibition of the covers of these books was organised. Moreover a company is realizing a film about the "Chronicles of Narnia" for the next year.
Some other students do also a Theatre exhibition and for this work a school year for do it and many student and teacher are involved for do it , and at the last they show " The lion the witch and the wardrobe " at Narni Theatre and also in other near Theatre.
In the same time we work in internet for have national and international contact and we find many other peoples involved in this beautiful adventure.
We can show you a little rapport about it:
• 40 students from Elementary School of Narni (10-11year)
• 60 students from Liceum Scientifich Gandhi di Narni (for theatre work “ Oltre l’armadio”)

• 12 students from hight school from Perugia, rif. Prof. M.Bracardi e G.Cesarini that work with reality work from Chronicles of Narnia Awedu “ingioco6” from Perugia.
In the 2005 star a Book Games in Terni city that involved about 20 middle school , ( about 400 students and teachers) that have like reference book Chronicles of Narnia and students have a competition about it.

Wow what interesting things you find on this site. I read the atricle about where Lewis got Narnia and found it so interesting. I also checked out the pictures and little bit of History on the bellaumbria web site. It is a beautiful place and good history. I will probably enjoy this site as much as I do TORC. I want to learn all I can about the books and Lewis. |

Italic Peoples
Your mention of bellaumbria brought to mind this month's issue of National Geographic. It has an excellent article, albeit not as long as many of us would like, concerning Italic peoples and their culture before Roman conquest or assimilation. Lewis was undoubtedly familiar with all of this as he was steeped in Classics from a young age, just as much as Tolkien was steeped in Anglo-Saxon and Northern European mythology and study. |

I read the article you're talking about. Actually I just got the magazine yesterday. I find it very interesting that there were these other cultures present that we don't really hear about so much. And yet there are still customs present in the culture today that date back to that time. They were more absorbed, instead of erased. Still, it could not have been a very peaceful absorbtion. I can't help but see the comparison to America and what it did to the Native peoples, and wish we'd had the sense not to do such things...
I was also astounded at the amount of grape vines they had piled up! I guess something has to happen to them. |

pre-Roman Italic peoples
Yes, that article was very good wasn't it! I enjoyed it thoroughly also. I wonder, however, how much of the culture of these people, and of the Roman and Italian people as a whole, that Lewis incorporated into his Chronicles. They are not of the depth of, say, Middle Earth so I'm curious as to whether or not it would be obvious at all. |

Yeah I see what you mean. I think a lot of his inspiration for Narnia probably came from his love of mythology. A lot of that mythology was Greek or Roman, and so we have visits by Bacchus, Silenus, satyrs, etc. A lot of the fantastic creatures in Narnia can be found in sculpture gardens in Italy.
That said, I think a lot of it has an English, or maybe it would be better to say British feel to it. I'm sorry for being obvious After all, it's first human king and queen were formerly a cabby and his wife from London...
So I think it's a meeting of the two. Italian culture is very different from the culture Lewis and many of his readers came from, so I think part of what makes it all so interesting is the contrasts between the two.
Oh, also there is a bit of old Norse mythology in there too, i.e. the giants of Harfang, and the Dwarves. He didn't go quite so far as Tolkien by a long shot as far as creating his own world, but I think a lot of its appeal comes from its familiarity. OK, I'm done now |

Romanized Britain
I wonder if when the land which would become England was controlled by the Romans, and the local Celts Romanized, if a Lewis-esque mythology actually existed; i.e. some type of synthesis of classical and Northern European mythology? I suppose it's possible, although I have not seen it mentioned anywhere.
Obviously the Romans left a lasting legacy throughout Europe that is far too extensive to attempt to lay out in a forum - volumes could be written about it, and undoubtedly have. It would be interesting, however, to see if Lewis was aware of such a synthesis and borrowed from it. |

Yes but sometimes in Italian the wording that might directly translate to English would not be the word we might use. I speak fluent Spanish which helps me see what he is trying to say.
Having a book Reference in Spanish means that one uses the book. It does not necessaroly mean that it
is
a reference book. That is why I wanted fguisepp to clear is up just to make sure. |
