At first glance the first few pictures looked like a catapult/trebuchet or something.
I really like the picture of the lake.
We've got a white Christmas!!!! It's been YEARS! |

Ah December pictures. I am glad the days are getting longer now, but there is something I do enjoy about the sun being in the southern part of the sky, casting longish shadows even in the middle of the day...
It's been rather wet here of late. It was supposed to snow a few inches today, but it didn't. It did snow, but not much. They even had issued a winter weather advisory. But to tell you the truth, I'm not too upset, mainly because I had to drive a lot today, and wasn't looking forward to driving in wet snow.
Willar, That picture makes you look much older than you really are. And, er... less... willowy than you really are.

I actually wondered when you failed to comment before on the . . . er . . . lack of willowy-ness of my picture.
We're getting snow tonight.
Which is really good, cause we tried to go snowshoeing today, and there wasn't enough snow. There was more snow in my backyard than there was up in the mountains where we went. It was very disappointing. |

For some reason, I get the impression that Soj is excited about this.
We didn't get the snow last night that we were supposed to. |

No snow at all here-- we have to wait until after New Year's Day if the forecast is right. |

Tomorrow morning I'm going up into the mountains where there's bunches of snow - I'm so excited!
Last year when the teens went on winter retreat there was probably around a foot when we got up into the mountains, but when we all woke up the next morning there was a fresh 4 foot layer - it was great!
Wish me luck! |

Well, according to what I've heard, the warmth back East is due to El Nino . . . but . . . everything "unusual" in weather is supposedly due to El Nino. |

Welp...I've been in Michigan where it's practically been tropical for the past few days until today when we finally got some colder temps and a dusting of snow.
Rumor has it that there's a winter storm coming just in time for me to fly home to Washington though. Let's hope my flight out of Chicago makes it all the way to Portland before the storm hits. It's supposed to be a doozy.
Plus I miss Washington and I would probably cry if my return was delayed. |

Augh! Albino brain chiggers!!!
I mean...it's snowing here too.
I hope everything works out Imieveara! I was driving back here yesterday, and it was supposed to be snowy and sleety, but it ended up being sunny most of the way home. Just saying that to show that weather usually isn't exactly how they predict it (which I'm sure you know). |

It is currently so cold that when I go outside, my nosehairs freeze. I've NEVER seen it that cold here before. In Idaho yes, here no.
We went skating out on the lake, and brought home some big chunks of ice to carve. Ice sculpting here I come. |

Ah, yar. That's the way it was in Eastern NY recently too. (I don't live there, but I know someone who does.) We've had an interesting combination of snow/ice/snow/rain/ice/snow over the past three days. It's snowing now, and about 15 degrees or so. Yesterday, everything had this thin glaze of ice over it, and it was rather pretty, but I wouldn't have wanted to drive in it.
Willar, try the bubbles!
Sometimes we skate on the small pond in front of our house, but it has to freeze the right way... It has to freeze to a certain thickness without snow on it, and then if it does snow on it, we have to clear it off, or else it gets mushy. So it doesn't happen as often as we'd like, but it does happen occasionally. |

Neat! There's a skating rink near where I live, but I hardly ever go...I'm not very good, and it's a little embarrassing when there are little kids flying past when you're holding the wall to stay up. I hope to go sometime soon, though, because making a fool of yourself skating is rather fun. I've never been ice skating on a real outdoor pond/lake, though. (I have been on a parking lot that someone froze intentionally, but I'm not sure that counts.) It would be fun to try! Unfortunately, lakes are in short supply around here.
Forgive my rambling.
The snow is still here, powdery and perfectly lovely. It is brilliantly cold, too--my computer (that all-knowing machine) tells me that it is about 13 degrees below zero (F), without the wind chill. Cold! At least compared to what we've had so far this winter. I love snow! |

I think it's cold either way. The first year we moved back here to Vermont was in 1993, and I remember it getting to -35, and that during the day. It hasn't gotten that cold here in a couple years (I think -20 was the coldest), and the weather seems to be on a warming trend...
Skating outside can be somewhat different from skating in a rink. The ice tends to be a lot smoother in a rink, and last year, after skating on our pond, I actually had a rather hard time getting used to the smoother ice. I guess there are good things about both. I tend to like the extra grip you get on slightly rougher ice.
Edit: The reason (or one of them) that we have a small pond is because we live in a rather rural place, and there needs to be a source of water if a house fire were to occur. No fire hydrants out here! That, and I think our landlord wanted one. |

Ours is a BIG lake . . . . well . . . fairly so anyway. My brother and I toyed with the idea of seeing how far across we could go. But when we came across a big crack, I vetoed that idea. Though I still think it would probably have been ok, seeing that on either side of the crack the ice was almost a foot thick.
Skating outside is definitely different. I'd like it better if there wasn't snow on the ice, but unfortunately, currently there is.
But at the ice rink you have to go around and around and around and around . . . . and it's just boring.
Oh, one thing I forgot to mention yesterday. I was skating around the perimeter exploring, and I found an ice throne which someone had made out of big chunks of ice. It was really cool. But I forgot to bring my camera. Again. *sigh*
Edit: I forgot the bubbles again. Remind me tonight!!!! |

Jill,
It's SUMMER for you, isn't it? Here we are talking about snow and ice, and you are no doubt basking in the nice warm sun.
(edit:) Somehow I missed your earlier post about being a perfect day for swimming. You're making me want to take a vacation in Ecuador!
Ecuador is fairly close to the equator isn't it? Even in the winter, it probably doesn't get too cold.
Oh, by the way, if you look at the temperatures reported on this thread, remember that those of us in the U.S. use the Farenheit scale rather than Celcius. Water freezes at 32 degrees Farenheit. The conversion formula is Celcius = (Farenheit - 32) * 5/9. We had much discussion about that recently.
(edit:) Looks like you understood that already. I had alot of other things on my mind last night.
I have a nice warm wood fire going in my wood-burning stove. In fact, it nearly got TOO hot. I opened the door to tend it and the heat radiating out was so intense I had to cover my hands stir it. |

Actually we are not in summer we are in a kind of winter, because it rains but we have hight temperatures, that's why the season is called the rainy season.
I really have no idea of how many degrees in Farenheir are 35ºC...I'm going to look for that... |

Oh, I see. Let's see, 35ºC ... F = (C * 9/5) + 32 ... so that would be 95ºF! Wow! That is warm! Here I am burning wood, and you are looking for a swimming hole. |

lol "Cold air huh." Sorry that's just funny for me. Here (like Arch) my family is burning wood and a gas heater day and night. And, for me, as the week goes on it's going to get worse.
Though, all things considered. West Virginia has had one of the mildest winters in it's history, while everywhere else theres snow pilled 10 ft deep (well not quite that high, but you know...) .
I'm feeling really sorry for the people out west (of WV) and down south (of WV). But don't worry guys. Us WV hillbillies will get your coldness soon enough.
I've heard that theres been some 50+ deaths this year because of the weather. |

I've got cabin fever in the worst way right now...I haven't left my house since Monday.
Not safe to be on the roads in this weather...it seems to be improving today though. We shall see!
We got about 5 inches of snow yesterday which really isn't bad except that people out here don't know how to deal with and drive in this kind of weather. Granted, it's not safe, but it's definitely not the worst conditions I've ever seen in my life by any means. There were hundreds of accidents yesterday - absolutely insane.
All the packed snow froze into ice overnight so the roads were just wonderful this morning, I'm sure. I might be going out later today, so we'll see what's happening then.
It's warming up a tad, but anything that melts today will just freeze over tonight...very frustrating. |

Jill, that sounds scary! But you've posted since then, so everything must be okay.
Last night and this morning it snowed again! It is soooo pretty, and it's actually not very cold. We walked to church this morning in the snow...and in the road because none of the sidewalks were shoveled.
AND I got to go cross-country skiing for a little while yesterday--and that was before most recent snow came! It was lots of fun... |

I've never heard of golf ball sized hailstones having writing on them before.
It's a good thing the hailstones didn't hit
you
They're almost as big as you are!!!
Is that your little brother? How terribly tragic.

So if that's you in the last picture, who took the picture?
Or wait... if you're a tennis ball, maybe that tennis ball is your brother. If so, I can't tell you apart. (Sheesh guys, how could a human be TTBK's brother... hello?!) |

The snow is pretty to look at, but I'm getting cabin fever. Other than going to church and buying groceries, I see only the inside of my home and my place of work. I'm not very athletic although I do love to take walks in the woods (with my hobby of birding) at other times of the year. I am afraid I would look silly if I tried skiing. But I do have my books and love reading. |

Sooooo....
Today was a gorgeous day, and by this afternoon the snow was perfect for packing and building. My friends and I had a large-scale snowball fight, and then we went to a spot on campus between three buildings where there's an open space and lots of snow, and we crafted a masterpiece.
He was a man, made out of snow, and he was at least ten feet tall--my personal record for a snowman. He took about 10 of us almost two hours to make (the head was especially delicate), but he was truly magnificent to look upon. I haven't had so much fun in a long time! I love snow...and friends...and playing in the snow...
And so Elmohico (so christened by my friend) was a true masterpiece! We took pictures, some of which I'll have to put on here sometime, so you can all see him. Unfortunately, when we came by a few minutes ago, someone had pushed him down and stabbed a stick into his remains. But...such is life. And we had fun anyway! Plus, his legs are still standing, and they make me think of that poem, "Ozymandius." I can't quote it just now, but the gist of it remains there.
Then we went ice skating...I'm exhausted. So I'm going to sleep now. I just had to share Elmohico's story, since it's one of the most impressive things I've ever done. |
